The world has gone through several industrial revolutions. The first one in the 1780s where steam, water and mechanical equipment were responsible for the changes and developments, 1870s (electricity and mass production), 1960s (Information Technology and automated production), and now since 2010 is undergoing the 4th industrial revolution driven by robotics, IoT, Artificial Intelligence, to name a few.

The question we will be exploring is how ready Afrika is for this and how can this help Afrika with radical economic transformation.

Mr Robert Nkuna is the Director General of the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services (DTPS). Mr Nkuna has been in the Digital Technology industry for more than 20 years and worked at the leadership level mainly in the public sector, including The Post Office, ICASA and also held strategic political and public service positions. As the new DG Mr Nkuna has been advocating the understanding of the 4th industrial revolution as the important era that the country and the African continent needs to prepare for.

Mr Linda Khumalo is the Chairman of the South African Digital Content Organisation (SADICO) and founder of AlertingSA, a Cyber Security company. Mr Khumalo has been in the Digital Technology industry for more than 20 years and worked at the leadership level for the public and private sectors, including Telkom, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia-Siemens Networks. Mr Khumalo is also an academic in the digital technology industry with 3 books published since since 1998.

Mashila Matlala

Ms Matlala has extensive experience in the field of policy and regulatory development. She has held positions of Executive: Regulatory Affairs and Strategy at Telkom, Chief Director: Policy and Research Development at the Department of Communications where she was instrumental in developing, including drafting, of the current Electronic Communications Act of 2005 and licensing of various entities including INFRACO, NEOTEL and the listing of Telkom. She initiated the policy process in the Local Loop Unbundling and for the development of policy guidelines for the deployment of the undersea cables. Ms Matlala has sat on the boards of Telkom International (Pty) Ltd, Lesotho Telecommunications Authority. She currently sits on the board of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and National Development Agency (NDA). Ms Matlala is a director of Mothipa Business Solutions (trading as MB Solutions), a company she established in 2003, which undertakes technical installations, ICT and Project Management and Strategic development.
