Pikiwash, a Rwandan startup that provides a motorcycle care service, has been announced as the winner of the Rwanda leg of the Seedstars World Afrika toour. Pikiwash will now represent Rwanda at the Seedstars Summit in Switzerland during April 2018 to compete for up to $1 million in equity investment among other prizes.
The Seedstars Summit is a week long training program that provides startups with the opportunity to meet the other Seedstars winners from around the world, as well as investors and mentors.
Umbrella, a digital platform that provides access to crucial information about sexual reproductive health (SRH) to young women came second and HelloJob a web app that links technical job seekers and job givers grabbed the last spot in the top 3. The other startups invited to pitch were BAG Innovation Limited, Imagine We, AgriGo Ltd, ONGERA LTD., Academia, Vitcard, Fiatope Digital Solutions, Made In Rwanda Online Ltd.
According to Pikiwash, there's an estimated 30,000 taxi motorbikes in Rwanda, and one of the problem's they face is access to modern, effective and efficient motorbike cleaning and basic maintenance services. Pikiwash addresses this problem by offering both cleaning and mechanical services for the taxi motorbikes.
The Seedstars Afrika tour in search of the continent's best startups kicked off in May 2017 with the South African leg. Seedstars also announced the addition of Cameroon, Sudan, Zambia, Mauritius, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and more Afrikan countries for 2017.
Seedstars World is also working with Enel Green Power to source innovative business models in the energy sectors and ones that are fostering socio-economic development in rural villages in Africa. Up to 5 startups in this sector will be invited for an exclusive RES4Africa networking event taking place during November 2017 in Nairobi and compete for an Africa Energy Prize which consists of a financial contribution and a three-month acceleration programme for a total value of up to $50,000.
