Google’s 2017 Year in South African search

Google's results of their trending searches for 2017 offer a sneak peek into 2017's major South African moments. During 2017, Google's trending searches show a growing interest in South African celebrities and events.

This is evident with 7 of the top 10 trending South African search terms being local, in comparison to 2016 where fewer than half of the searches were local.

Google also highlighted that in 2017, South Africans increasingly used search to find local businesses - the ‘near me’ search list shows what types of businesses South Africans look for in their neighbourhoods and highlights the importance of these (often small) businesses being online and findable.

These trends and information is taken from data collated by Google based on what South Africans have been searching for and asking Google during 2017. The Silicon Valley company says it processes more than 40 000 search queries every second, which translates to more than a billion searches per day and 1,2 trillion searches per year globally.
