Netflix has announced that it has entered into a multiyear agreement with former USA President, Barack Obama, and his wife, Michelle Obama, for content production. The Obamas are reported to have setup a company called Higher Ground Productions, specifically to produce content for Netflix.

The content that the Obamas will produce for Netflix will include scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features. They will be both "behind and in front of the camera" depending on the story being told.

“Barack and Michelle Obama are among the world’s most respected and highly-recognized public figures and are uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better. We are incredibly proud they have chosen to make Netflix the home for their formidable storytelling abilities,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, in a statement announcing the deal.

Netflix has been spending heavily and investing in original content over the past few years with shows such as Narcos along with the much talked about deal that comedian Dave Chapelle signed which saw him cashing in $60 million for supplying Netflix with three comedy specials. Despite this, some have noted how all the money Netflix is spending on content production and acquisition, very little is making its way to Afrikan storytellers.

“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience. That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix – we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world,” said President Obama in the statement released by Netflix.

Netflix has indicated that the content the Obamas will be producing for them will be available to all Netflix subscribers in 190 countries.

“Barack and I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others. Netflix’s unparalleled service is a natural fit for the kinds of stories we want to share, and we look forward to starting this exciting new partnership,” said Michelle Obama.
