Showmax, the streaming platform owned by MulticChoice, has launched a Beta (trial) section for live sports content as well as pre-recorded sports shows. Like its competitors, Netflix and Amazon Prime, Showmax used to only stream movies and TV series but now has included selected live coverage of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup among some of the sports content users can stream on its platform.
The sports content section is currently only bein tested for South African users of Showmax.
"There are no current plans to offer full bouquets of all sports, however, we do intend to try different content on the service over time," wrote Showmax in a tweet.
It's important to note that not all South African customers of Showmax have access to the service but, according to Showmax, a randomly selected group of customers. The option is, for those customers that have it, available on most Showmax apps and platforms except Apple TV, Xbox and Playstation.
From what we've seen on the Showmax app after logging in, the following sports shows and live content is available; live broadcast of some ICC Cricket World Cup matches, highlights and selected shows from SuperSport (same ones that air on DStv), and more.
Showmax couldn't commit on whether this will be extended to all users including across the continent or not. It's also important to highlight that DStv customers who have access to the DStv Now app (including on mobile devices) have always had access to live and pre-recorded sports content on demand.
