After almost two years since it first launched during 2017, Econet Media's video streaming service, Kwesé Play, has officially shut down. In a message to customers, Econet Media has confirmed that Kwesé Play will no longer be available after several months of rumours and speculation that the Zimbabwean owned media company was struggling to keep its operations afloat as it is not generating as much revenue as it had expected to.

The confirmation comes several weeks after Econet Media issued a statement to deny that Kwesé Play was being shut down and told paying customers whose Kwesé Play devices were deactivated that it was working on "resolving it. Detailed communication will be provided to all customers in due course. We thank you for your understanding and patience."

"Econet licensed our platform to deliver the Kwesé Play streaming service to its customers. Econet is shutting down the Kwesé Play service and is no longer working with Roku. For more information contact Kwesé/Econet." reads an earlier statement by Roku, manufacturer of Kwesé Play devices, explaining why the devices were being deactivated.

In its last statement announcing the shutdown of Kwese Play, Econet Media doesn't offer much of an explanation as to why the service is shutting down, neither does it explain why Roku has opted to deactivate the devices. Instead, they offer customers "airtime equivalent to the purchase value of the Kwese Play Roku device.

“A few weeks ago, Roku, our technology platform partners, deactivated all the Kwesé Play devices in our markets and customers have been unable to use them to watch Netflix, YouTube and other apps on their TVs. We’ve spent considerable time negotiating with Roku in order to reactivate the devices, but have unfortunately been unsuccessful. This means that the Kwesé Play devices will remain deactivated and will no longer work.”

Dear Customer

Further to our earlier communication, we regret to inform you that the Kwese Play service will no longer be available in Zimbabwe. Econet Media sincerely apologises for this unexpected turn of events and for the inconvenience caused.

In recognition of your unwavering support Econet Media is offering you airtime equivalent to the purchase value of the Kwese Play Roku device you acquired.

You are free to use the airtime for all your voice or data transactions. The airtime shall be valid for a period of thirty (30) days from the date of credit.

To facilitate the credit process, by return email, please supply your purchase receipt number or serial number of the Kwese play Roku device and the mobile number to be credited with the airtime. Upon successful verification we will credit your airtime within 24 hours. Please note the offer for airtime is valid until 15 August 2019.

Should you choose not to keep the obsolete Kwese Play device, please return the device to the nearest Econet Wireless shop for safe disposal.
