TelOne, Zimbabwe's state-owned telecommunications, and digital technology company have announced the opening of a data center in Bulawayo. This makes it the fifth data center in Zimbabwe to be opened by TelOne in the Southern Afrikan country.

Among those attending the opening of the data center in Matebeleland was Jenfan Muswere, Zimbabwe's Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services.

"Our expectation is for you to deliver 25% revenue market share, develop 10 new data-centric products and services, reduction in overhead expenses and infrastructure expansion and sharing," Muswere is reported to have said.

The need for data centers across Afrika

In just over a decade, Afrika's innovation and digital technology sectors have grown by leaps and bounds. Apart from the growth of blue-chip companies, we have also witnessed new startups being born and scaling rapidly in their own countries or across the continent.

However, for this growth to be sustained it is going to be necessary that more and more colocation data centers are built around the continent.

In March 2022, the state-owned company opened another data center at the Mazowe Earth Station. This was TelOne's fourth data center. The company has said that it has invested approximately $4 million since 2016 towards the development of more than 1,300 sqm (14,000 sq ft) of floor space worth of data centers.
